It truly lives up to the name "A Hundred Voices Forum." The "Reading Joy" column was launched in January 1986 as a special column derived from the "Nightlight Cup" supplement. It was proposed by the supplement editor Cao Zhengwen and was independently edited by him from 1986 to 2006, totaling 20 years and 1,000 issues by August 2006.
Throughout its 20 years, the "Reading Joy" column maintained the consistent style of the "Nightlight Cup," organizing submissions from renowned writers while valuing contributions from readers. Cao Zhengwen, under the pen name "Mishu," ran the column "Book Friends' Tea House," responding to and assisting 10,000 readers with their book purchases. The column has featured 20 sections over the years, including "Joy in Books," "Why I Write," "Me and Books," "A Book That Influenced My Life," "My Study," "Current Reading Perspectives," "My Recommended Books," "Book Reviews," "Evening Reading Musings," "Book Hunting Records," "Bookstore Sketches," "Editorial Notes," and "Experiences in Foreign Book Markets."
The column has organized over 300 submissions from renowned scholars and writers such as Bing Xin, Zhao Jiabuli, Ke Ling, Shi Zhecun, Wang Yuanhua, Zhang Kebiao, Qin Shouou, Yu Guangyuan, Zang Kejia, Tang Guizhang, Su Buqing, Qian Zhonglian, Jia Zhifang, Ji Xianlin, Chen Huangcao, Jin Kemu, Qin Zhuang, Feng Yingzi, Zhou Ruchang, Lou Shiyi, Zhang Peiheng, Wang Meng, Liu Shaha, Zhang Xianliang, Yu Qiujiu, and Zhang Ping. Seven series of "Reading Joy" books have been published, and the column has won more than 10 awards. Renowned professor and former president of the Shanghai Writers' Association Xu Zhongyu once praised the "Reading Joy" column: "Though short, the articles are full of meaning and charm. They are often conversational, blending seriousness with humor, with little cliché and plenty of interest. Here, solemn lectures have little market—it can be said to be a pure land in the garden of news."
