When reviewing the topics of travel books, they can generally be categorized into four types: regional, route-based, experiential, and conceptual. Regional books are the "classic" approach in travel literature, organized by region or famous landmarks. This type of topic no longer interests readers unless it has unique regional characteristics. Route-based travel books primarily focus on rediscovering ancient historical and cultural routes, such as retracing the "Long March" or the "Silk Road." Recent trends in route-based books include a shift from mass-market self-guided tours to more personalized remote adventure routes, and from mass-market self-guided tours to self-driving tours. Experiential travel books are usually of two types: spiritual tourism and cultural tourism. However, neither type achieves deep experiential engagement. The former remains superficial, limited to personal reflections, (private thoughts, notes, and personal experiences) on travel diaries, while the latter is confined to the accumulation of cultural materials or superficial observations. Conceptual travel books were once popular but have since faded, such as destination tourism, economic tourism, soft travel, and spiritual tourism.
