Features: Oral materials science is an interdisciplinary field between oral medicine and materials science, serving as a fundamental course for oral medicine professionals. Its content is rich and extensive, encompassing not only oral medicine but also physics, chemistry, engineering, information science, and both fundamental and clinical aspects of biomedical science. To advance the development of this emerging multidisciplinary field, in accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Health's Textbook Office and the Oral Medicine Professional Textbook Evaluation Committee, the third edition of the national planned textbook "Oral Materials Science" was jointly compiled by oral medicine colleges from Sichuan University, Jilin University, Shanghai Second Medical University, Wuhan University, Peking University, and the Fourth Military Medical University. During the compilation process, the authors adhered to the principles of combining theory and practice, fundamentals and applications, and local and holistic perspectives. This edition highlights the characteristics of oral materials and the latest domestic and international research findings while striving to accommodate the actual conditions and basic teaching facilities of most higher education institutions in China, fully reflecting the ideological, scientific, advanced, inspirational, and applicability of the textbook. Based on the second edition, this version has been revised and supplemented. It remains divided into five chapters—General Principles, Oral Organic Polymer Materials, Oral Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials, Oral Metallic Materials, and Oral Auxiliary Materials—according to the properties of materials, catering to the teaching needs of undergraduate students in five-year and extended programs in oral medicine at Chinese higher education institutions.
The Oral Materials Science course employs both lecture-based and experimental teaching methods. Through the study of this discipline, students first gain a thorough understanding of the fundamental theories of oral materials science and acquire extensive multidisciplinary knowledge in science, engineering, and medicine. In future clinical practice, they can apply this knowledge to effectively utilize oral materials for the repair and replacement of damaged oral tissues, organs, and physiological forms, as well as to restore lost physiological functions. This process enables students to familiarize themselves with contemporary theories, methods, and technologies in natural sciences, gain an in-depth understanding of the interactions between oral materials and the structure and function of oral tissues, and ultimately provide theoretical foundations and rational designs for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases, thereby better serving society.
