Features: Yu Chang, styled Lizun, alias Xiangcao, was a native of Nanhui, Jiangsu in the Qing Dynasty. He was born in the fourth year of the Xianfeng era (1854) and died in the second year of the Xuantong era (1910). He passed the Bacei examination in the Dingyou year of the Guangxu era (1897) but did not enter official service. He studied under Zhang Wenhu and Zhong Wenzeng. Wang Xianshan was his mentor when he was a candidate for the canteen scholar. He corresponded with Yu Yue and others. He wrote over twenty works, including Xiangcao Jiaoshu (60 volumes), Xiangcao Xujiaoshu (22 volumes), Zhanguo Ce Zhu (33 volumes, with an additional preface and chronology), Zhouyi Xuyi (3 volumes), Shangshu Duyi (6 volumes), and Yili Duyi (2 volumes). Most of Yu Chang's works, including a significant portion of Xiangcao Jiaoshu, were published. Zhang Yicheng, Yu's, preserved Yu's manuscripts during the War of Resistance Against Japan and collated copies. In 1954, Zhang Yicheng and others donated all of Yu's manuscripts and collated copies to the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Xiangcao Jiaoshu focuses on collating and correcting the classics, while Xiangcao Xujiaoshu focuses on collating and correcting works in the philosophical and historical categories, including the Laozi to the Shuijing Zhu and the Huainanzi (fifteen schools). Among them, the section on Yangzi primarily collects remarks on Yang Zhu from the Liezi, with the last three entries compiled from the Zhuangzi, Shuayuan, and Huainanzi. The entire section does not include authorial annotations, differing in format from the other entries.
