1. The Function and Types of Accessories
Accessories refer to decorative items chosen and worn by people while dressing. Their utility value is not very strong, and some accessories may even have no practical use. However, they play a supplementary, enhancing, complementary, and beautifying role in people's attire, especially for clothing. Unlike clothing, which is indispensable to humans, accessories can be worn or not worn at will. From an aesthetic perspective, they are ranked as one of the three major methods people use to decorate and beautify themselves, alongside clothing and makeup. In social settings, accessories are particularly eye-catching and serve certain communicative functions. These are primarily reflected in the following two aspects: First, they are a silent language that can express the wearer's knowledge, experience, education, and aesthetic taste. Second, they are intentional hints that can reveal the wearer's status, identity, wealth, and marital status. These functions, especially the second, are difficult to replace by ordinary clothing. However, in modern times, the symbolic meaning of wealth associated with accessories has been replaced by their decorative significance, making the material quality of accessories less important. People wear accessories primarily for decoration and beautification, so aesthetic appeal, practicality, and coordination become the basic guiding principles for choosing accessories. Moreover, under limited financial conditions, such choices better reflect a person's cultural refinement, aesthetic interests, and lifestyle. Broadly speaking, any items used alongside clothing to enhance its decorative effect, such as jewelry, watches, ties, handkerchiefs, hats, gloves, bags, eyeglasses, pens, shoes, and socks, can all be referred to as accessories, with jewelry being the most important. Others include watches, ties, etc.
2. Rules for Wearing Jewelry
(1) Quantity Rule: When wearing jewelry, the principle is to wear as few pieces as possible. If necessary, you may wear none at all. If you intend to wear multiple pieces, the total should not exceed three.
(2) Color Rule: When wearing jewelry, the principle is to aim for consistency in color. If you wear two or more pieces, their colors should match. When wearing jewelry, the dominant color should remain uniform.
(3) Material Rule: When wearing jewelry, the principle is to strive for consistency in material. If you wear two or more pieces, their materials should be the same. When wearing jewelry, the material of the embedded stones should be uniform, and the settings should also be as consistent as possible. Additionally, it is important to note that high-end accessories, especially jewelry, are more suitable for formal social occasions and are not appropriate for work or casual settings.
(4) Status Rule: When wearing jewelry, it is important not only to consider personal preferences but also to ensure that the attire aligns with your identity. It should be in harmony with your gender, age, occupation, and work environment, avoiding significant discrepancies.
(5) Body Shape Rule: When wearing jewelry, pay full attention to your body shape and strive to highlight your strengths while minimizing weaknesses.
(6) Seasonal Rule: Generally, the type of jewelry worn should vary with the season. Gold and dark-colored jewelry are suitable for colder seasons, while silver and bright-colored jewelry are better for warmer seasons.
(7) Coordination Rule: When wearing jewelry, the principle is to coordinate with your attire. Jewelry should be considered as part of the overall outfit. Take into account the texture, color, and style of the clothing being worn and strive for harmony.
(8) Custom Rule: When wearing jewelry, adhere to customs. Different regions and ethnic groups may have varying traditions regarding jewelry wear. It is essential to understand and respect these customs.
