Features: This rabbit hole went straight forward at first, like a tunnel. At a certain point, it suddenly turned straight down, so abruptly. Alice didn’t even have time to think before she tumbled headfirst into a very deep well. It wasn’t that the well was extremely deep, or that Alice fell extremely slowly—because as she fell, she actually had time to look around and wonder what would happen next. She first looked down to see what she would land on, but it was too dark down there to see anything. Then she looked around the sides of the well and saw shelves and bookcases all over the walls. As she passed by a shelf, she casually grabbed a jar from it. The label on the jar said "orange marmalade," but it was empty inside, and she was quite disappointed. She didn’t want to throw the jar away, afraid it might hurt someone below. So when she passed by a cupboard, she put it back inside.
"Hey!" Alice thought, "After such a big fall, if I roll down the stairs from now on, it won’t be anything! My family will think I’m so brave!" Hmph! Even if I fell from the roof, I’d stay quiet! That might actually be true—after such a fall, you probably wouldn’t be able to speak anyway. Down, down, down! Could it really go on forever?
"I wonder, how many miles have I fallen down by now?" she shouted. "I must be almost to the center of the earth! I think, that’s about four thousand miles deep, I think." You see, Alice had learned quite a bit in class! Down, down, down! Suddenly, with a splash, she landed on a pile of branches and dry leaves and finally reached the bottom. Alice wasn’t injured at all, and she jumped right up. She saw the white rabbit, who was hurrying forward. Alice didn’t waste a moment and chased after him like the wind. Just as she turned the corner, she heard the rabbit say, "Oh dear! My ears and whiskers, it’s already so late!" (The rabbit’s features are long ears and whiskers, so he uses this as an exclamation, like "My goodness!")
When Alice turned the corner, she was quite close to the rabbit, but in the blink of an eye, the rabbit was gone. P6-10
