All investors hope to invest the least and gain the most. But in the world of interests, both sides are always in conflict, neither willing to give up their benefits without reason. At this point, it depends on how you leverage the needs between the parties to balance this conflict. When you cleverly find the intersection of these needs, you can achieve the least input with the greatest return, and sometimes you can even gain infinite benefits without spending a penny.
Tuddle originally worked at a glass manufacturing company in Aragaz as an engineer. As a self-taught engineer, he was not financially well-off, but he was eager to get into the oil business. One day, he heard from a friend that Argentina was about to purchase $20 million worth of butane gas in the market, so he went there to give it a try. In Argentina, he found that the competitors were formidable: British Petroleum and Shell Oil. At the same time, he also discovered another piece of information completely unrelated to oil: Argentina had a surplus of beef, and the government was desperate to sell it off. When he learned this, he had an idea. A brilliant plan came to mind; he thought he had an advantage over the two oil giants. He told the Argentine government, "If you buy $20 million worth of butane from me, I will buy $20 million worth of beef from you." Based on the government's surplus of beef, Argentina signed the contract with him.
After getting the contract, Tuddle immediately flew to Spain. A large shipbuilding yard in Spain was on the brink of closure due to a lack of orders. It was a key state-supported factory, involving political and other sensitive issues, and the government was in a tough spot. He proposed to the Spanish government, "If you buy $20 million worth of beef from me, I will order a $20 million super tanker from your shipyard." The Spanish were delighted.
After leaving Spain, Tuddle went straight to the Sun Oil Company in Philadelphia: "If you rent the $20 million super tanker I am building in Spain, I will buy $20 million worth of butane gas from you." Sun Oil agreed to Tuddle's terms. As a result, Tuddle made this big business without spending a penny.
Finally, Tuddle used his wisdom and strategy to convince all parties to accept his conditions, achieving his goal of entering the oil industry. P40
