Features: The building is commonly referred to as Shangpei Building and is located on the western side of the campus. Since I enrolled as a day student, I didn’t live with my department mates but found a bed in Shangpei Building through connections. My dorm was Room 408. Actually, before this incident, I had no idea about anything supernatural, but there was a frightening story circulating in the building. It went like this—
On the night of a large-scale national performance hosted by our school, everyone went to watch the show in front of the main building, leaving only the elderly security guard in Shangpei Building. As the performance neared its end, the lights in the building suddenly went out, plunging it into complete darkness. The guard, using the faint stage lights from the main building, tried to find candles. Suddenly, he felt a chill behind him, and a dark, shadowy figure that seemed part human, part something else burst out of the door.
Thinking it was a thief, the guard shouted, “Freeze!” and quickly chased after it. But he stumbled and fell to the ground. Looking up, he watched the shadow leap and disappear into the nearby bushes. The guard was puzzled—because the bushes weren’t dense; they were just a single row. Behind them lay an open grassy field, and at the far end was a stone wall built of blue bricks. If the figure ran that way, where could it go? Could it have squeezed through the stone wall? The guard didn’t think much of it at the time, only feeling sore all over from the fall and unable to catch the figure. So he got up and walked back into the building.
To his surprise, the lights in the building suddenly came back on. Shortly after, the performance ended, and many students returned to the building. The guard called his classmates back to check if they had lost anything and even had the school security search the building a few times. But nothing was missing. The security searched for a long time without finding any clues. So, if the shadowy figure wasn’t a thief, what was it?
I heard this story from the guard while playing poker with my dorm mates. He told us this incident, and we were all terrified. When we asked what the figure looked like, the guard said he couldn’t see its face, only that it was shorter than an adult and moved extremely quickly, leaping and hopping as it ran.
After playing poker with the guard that night, my dorm mates and I started discussing the incident. The more we talked, the more strange it seemed—not to mention what the figure looked like or how it disappeared, but the power outage was unexplainable. The main building and Shangpei Building were connected to the same power cable. If there was an electrical issue, both buildings would have lost power simultaneously. Yet, that night, the performance went smoothly, and the main building had no power outage.
Moreover, the power came back on after the outage, which meant someone must have been controlling the switches inside the building. The figure had left and then returned as the power was restored. So, who was controlling the switches in the building?
Now, the row of bushes should no longer be there. In front of Shangpei Building is a small patch of grass, with the stone wall still at the far end. As for who removed the bushes and why, you’ll find out later. But there’s one thing I can reveal in advance: someone reported the strange events of that night to the school. Unfortunately, the school didn’t take immediate action and dismissed it as a failed theft attempt.
Then, one day, another incident occurred—one still related to those bushes—and after that, the bushes were uprooted completely.
