Features: The film Red Detachment of Women is one of the eight "Revolutionary Model Plays" and is performed in the form of Revolutionary Modern Peking Opera. As a special product of a special historical period, this film sought to break through in artistic achievement and promote the traditional stage art of Peking Opera. However, it was inevitably constrained by the "Three Prominences" creative principle, resulting in a high degree of conceptualization and stereotypical elements in character portrayal, costume color selection, and lighting techniques, all of which are also reflected in the film poster.
First, the composition of this film poster strictly adheres to the inherent model of "Model Play" films, consisting of a main image and several illustrations. In the main image, Li Yuhé, who appears as a railway worker but is secretly an underground party member, stands upright with a stern and severe expression. His eyes are filled with hatred, indicating his unwavering determination, steadfast stance, and resolute commitment to fighting the enemy. The two sturdy and upright green pines standing in contrast to him in the image symbolize the noble character of the revolutionary fighter Li Yuhé, who, like the pines, remains upright even under immense pressure and demonstrates an indomitable fighting spirit. The red lantern he holds serves to highlight the theme of the film. It can guide loyal revolutionaries forward with determination while also exposing the cruelty of the Japanese invaders and the treacherous nature of the traitor who damages the interests of the nation and its people, keeping the masses more alert. The seven illustrations in the image briefly summarize the intense dramatic conflicts and exciting plot of this Revolutionary Modern Peking Opera.
During the Anti-Japanese War, the North China region was still under enemy rule. Li Yuhé, a railway worker and secret underground party member, and his family of three generations were bound together by the shocking "February 7th" general strike, though they had no blood ties, they became closer than family through shared hardship. Li Yuhé accepted the mission of delivering secret codes to the Xiangbashan guerrilla unit but was arrested and imprisoned due to the betrayal of a traitor. The enemy used both soft and hard tactics, coercing and tempting Li Yuhé to reveal the secret codes, but he remained fearless and unyielding. In the end, the ruthless enemy brutally killed Li Yuhé and Li Nainai. However, the revolution had successors—Li Tiemei inherited the legacy of her predecessors and delivered the secret codes to Xiangbashan, coordinating with the guerrillas to annihilate the invading Japanese forces.
