After being assigned to the newspaper office, Xiao Zheng was given the task of interviewing a model worker from a factory. Days earlier, Xiao Zheng had meticulously prepared his interview outline, determined to showcase his skills in front of everyone. Finally, the day arrived. Xiao Zheng, tie, confirmed that everything was in order, and took a taxi to the factory to meet his first interview subject.
As soon as he entered the machine-noise-filled factory, Xiao Zheng felt something was off. When the model worker, covered in grease, stood before him, Xiao Zheng blushed with embarrassment. He felt awkward, his hands and feet didn’t know where to go, and his words stumbled. The model worker, affected by his demeanor, spoke less, and the interview had to be cut short.
Such situations are not uncommon in life. They reveal a simple truth: a person’s attire, whether intentional or not, creates a certain impression in the minds of those around them—perhaps pleasure, or perhaps disgust or disdain. In short, it directly impacts the success of your social interactions. Therefore, it’s essential to pay attention to your clothing.
We won’t dwell on well-known advice like dressing neatly and appropriately, as these are common knowledge. Instead, we’d like to offer two pieces of advice on how to choose clothing for social interactions.
Choosing social attire should be purposeful, tailored to the characteristics of the person you’re interacting with. People often assume that salespeople should wear "white shirts, sharp suits, and coordinated ties," as if suits are the uniform of a salesperson. In reality, that’s not always the case. Depending on the product and the target audience, the situation may be completely different.
A manager at an auto parts wholesale company noticed that 90% of their sales targets were small businesses and factories. The owners of these businesses were often wearing work uniforms while overseeing operations at auto repair shops. So, he instructed his sales team to wear the same kind of blue, top-and-bottom connected work uniforms as the owners when visiting them. Although the salespeople had objections, they followed the order. The results were positive.
Finally, the salespeople understood the manager’s reasoning. Their goal was to sell products, not to compete with the owners in terms of clothing. At this point, the work uniform had an advantage over the suit because everyone was dressed the same, creating a sense of closeness. The incongruity between work uniforms and suits disappeared, and the owners strongly felt the enthusiasm and diligence of the salespeople. Salespeople in dirty work uniforms, unafraid of getting dirty, were able to connect more easily with the workers.
However, when you represent your company in negotiations with another company, you must be careful with your attire and wear your best suit. If you’re disheveled while the other party is in a sharp suit, the negotiation hasn’t even started, and the other side already has an edge over you. At the negotiation table, your clothing and demeanor, just like your words, determine the success of the negotiation. You shouldn’t let the other party have the upper hand in any aspect.
Remember, first clarify your purpose, study your social audience, and then decide on your social attire.
Choosing clothing should also involve self-reflection. A young man, known for his elegance, always wore expensive suits. During a meeting, his boss publicly criticized him: "Someone earns very little but wears clothes that are far too expensive. Their income doesn’t match their expenses, and their character must be questionable." Although the boss didn’t name him, everyone knew who was being referred to. The man flushed with embarrassment and never wore expensive suits to the office again.
Without properly assessing one’s financial situation and social status and instead blindly chasing trendy, branded clothing, one often invites suspicion from others. Leaders naturally won’t entrust important tasks to people they don’t trust. More importantly, this approach increases financial burdens, making life far from easy.
