Can CT detect hydrocephalus?

Patient's question:

The child is 1.5 years old and has a large head. A CT scan was performed, and the results were normal. We are worried it might be hydrocephalus. Is it necessary to do an MRI?

Doctor's answer:

If an infant's head circumference increases and there are abnormalities in mental and motor development, it may indicate hydrocephalus. CT scans, ultrasound examinations, and MRI scans of the brain may be used to determine if the infant has hydrocephalus. Since the CT scan has already been completed and the results are normal, hydrocephalus should be ruled out, and there is no need for an MRI. As long as the infant's intellectual and motor development is normal, there should not be a problem. Pay attention to checking whether the baby's blood calcium is deficient.
