About the Author: Henry James (1843–1916) was an American writer and one of the pioneers of modern psychological analysis in Western literature. His works primarily focus on wealthy, noble, and affluent characters, often portrayed as morally upright. His novels are known for their extensive psychological analysis, which can be lengthy, convoluted, and even obscure, leading to a period where he lost readers. Later, in response to the rise of decadent literature, a new generation of critics resurrected him, elevating him to the status of a "literary master," and to this day, he still holds a certain influence in Western and European literary circles.
Textual Appreciation: The excerpt does not specify the gender or age of the other person—whether she considers him her husband, lover, friend, or something else. However, from a lengthy psychological analysis, it becomes clear that there is a significant and irreparable gap between the two: they both claim to have been deceived, and each disdains the other's core principles. Of course, she firmly believes she is blameless, never having deceived anyone, and has only experienced trust and admiration. Suddenly, her boundless yearning for a multifaceted, beautiful life turns into a dark and narrow dead end.
Next, the author shifts the narrative, using a comparative approach to dissect her psychological state: she had envisioned that their mutual trust would lead them to a higher realm of happiness and joy, where she could look down upon them with superiority, critically evaluate their flaws, offer pity, and feel content. However, she never imagined that her beautiful dreams would backfire, causing her to plummet into a state of constant restriction and unbearable frustration. There, the laughter and joy of the leisurely upper class only deepen her sense of loss and disappointment. P11
