What causes low red blood cell count

Patient's question:

My baby had a blood test last week. The results were: total white blood cells 11.7, reference range 4-10; neutrophils 21.6, reference range 46-76.5; lymphocytes 72.5, reference range 18.7-47; lymphocyte count 8.4.

Doctor's answer:

At 6 months of age. Children have physiologically higher white blood cell counts than adults. The ratio of lymphocytes and neutrophils is opposite to that of adults. There is physiological anemia. This is normal for a 6-month-old child and does not require treatment. You can eat more red meat (beef, lamb, pork), pork liver, jujubes, and longans. Foods rich in iron such as egg yolks and grains should also be consumed. If iron intake is insufficient or iron deficiency is severe, iron supplements must be taken. Vitamin C helps in the absorption of iron and also aids in the production of hemoglobin. Therefore, adequate intake of vitamin C is also necessary.
