How old should a child be before weaning?

Patient's question:

My child is 4 months old, can I wean them? What age is best for weaning for the child? Looking forward to your answer.

Doctor's answer:

As children grow, the various nutrients provided by breast milk can no longer meet their needs for growth and development. Weaning can occur between 9-12 months. In areas where dairy products or other dairy alternatives are scarce, weaning can be delayed to around 18 months, but there is no strict regarding the age of weaning. If your mother has more milk, you can continue nursing for a longer period. Around the age of one, if there is less breast milk, but the child is willing to eat cow's milk or other foods alongside it, you can also extend the nursing period. If there is less breast milk and the child is not willing to eat dairy products or other foods, weaning should be started earlier, potentially as early as 6 months.
