Do you need to remove the urinary catheter upon discharge from the hospital for hypospadias?

Patient's question:

My child is 3 years old and recently had surgery. I would like to ask, they still have a catheter inserted, but my child has been having emotional outbursts, saying they want to get this thing out. Do children with hypospadias need to have their catheter removed upon discharge?

Doctor's answer:

When the hypospadias patient is discharged from the hospital, the catheter does not need to be removed. Generally, about one week after the surgery, the incision heals well, and the condition stabilizes. The catheter can be taken out of the hospital. After discharge, it is recommended to pay attention to keeping the urethra unobstructed and drink plenty of water. Check if the urine is yellow, clear, cloudy, or bloody. If the ureter is blocked or fractured (all ureteral ends must be brought back to the hospital), please return to the hospital within 3 weeks to remove the catheter. After the surgery, or go to the local hospital to remove the catheter.
