Neonatal jaundice, liver function remains high for several days

Patient's question:

My friend's baby is 25 days old. When the baby was four days old, they were hospitalized for high jaundice. After three days, the jaundice returned to normal and they were taken home. A few days after coming home, the baby's jaundice became a bit yellow again. I want to ask how many days the baby's jaundice and liver function have been high continuously?

Doctor's answer:

General infant jaundice occurs 3-4 days after birth and usually disappears within about a week. Around half a month after birth, if the jaundice is still very noticeable, the mother may become very concerned about whether the bile duct is blocked or if there are liver problems, and seek medical attention at a pediatric hospital. However, physiological infant jaundice often persists for about a month before subsiding. Although the jaundice has not disappeared within half a month, it does not necessarily mean the child has a serious illness.
