Patient's question:
My baby just turned one month old. Today, when I took him for a vaccination, the doctor at the hospital said that my baby has a slightly elevated level of jaundice. I didn't quite understand it, so I went to a nearby hospital for a check-up. Could you please tell me what the normal jaundice level for babies is?Doctor's answer:
This type of infant jaundice refers to the period of infancy. Due to abnormal bilirubin metabolism, it leads to elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood. The appearance of yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera is a characteristic of this disease. It is the most common clinical problem in infants. Physiological jaundice is a transient jaundice caused by bilirubin metabolism. It occurs 2 to 3 days after birth, peaks between 4 to 6 days, and subsides between 7 to 10 days.
