Features: Don't read solely for exams. Explain the significance of efficient reading from the perspective of learning. Of course, learning is not just about reading; thinking and repeated practice are also essential. Reading is the basic ability and method of learning, and acquiring knowledge cannot be separated from reading. During the Northern Song Dynasty, the great writer Ouyang Xiu believed that establishing learning is based on reading. Contemporary mathematician Hu Roujing once said, "Learning must begin with solid reading." Throughout history and across cultures, countless famous figures, scholars, and scientists have loved books almost to the point of obsession. They highly regarded books: "Books are the nourishment of humanity." "Ideal books are the keys to wisdom." "All theories that the intellect and all passions that move the soul are crystallized in books." Scientist Isaac Newton aptly compared books to "the shoulders of giants." If you stand on the shoulders of giants, you have the hope of surpassing them. While emphasizing the importance of reading for learning is not solely for exams, there is no doubt that efficient reading can quickly improve your academic performance and help you overcome the difficulties you encounter in learning.
Nowadays, students are often burdened with excessive tasks, leading to boredom and a lackadaisical attitude toward reading. If reading is a painful experience for you—making you anxious or headaches whenever you sit down to read—then even if you force yourself to sit at the desk every day for exams, this coercive reading habit cannot be sustained effectively. It can only last for a short time. Once the external pressure of exams disappears, this reluctant reading habit will vanish without a trace. This is also why many college students experience a decline in grades after being freed from exam pressure. Meanwhile, those so-called high-achieving students are forced to read even more, reading quickly and mastering the tricks to questions or exams. In reality, this learning method has become an obstacle, hindering the formation of their own knowledge system. Methods like rote memorization, distraction, or staring intently at books are ineffective. Everyone must find their own reading time and effective reading methods suitable for different purposes.
When academic performance improves due to reading, the resulting sense of achievement will motivate you to read even more actively. Conversely, if you are constantly tied to school, never leaving the premises, eyes glued to textbooks, yet your grades show no improvement, the frustration that follows will make you even more averse to reading, creating a vicious cycle.
Edison was a great inventor. Statistics show that he held over 2,000 patents in his lifetime. He lived to the age of 85, which means he averaged one invention every 15 days. Even amidst such a hectic schedule, Edison still managed to read three books every day. Whenever he conducted an experiment, no matter how difficult the theoretical aspects were, he would first gather all available relevant books and read them thoroughly, one by one, until he understood the theory before starting the experiment. While researching an improved part for a typewriter, he borrowed all the books about typewriters, studied them systematically, and quickly solved the problem. During the days he invented the electric light, he often immersed himself in the library, carefully reading articles from various magazines and journals, and taking notes as needed.
Edison's reading method, which was problem-oriented and purpose-driven, greatly benefited his scientific inventions and benefited him immensely throughout his life.
When you encounter learning problems, have you ever asked yourself: How do I approach reading and learning? The correct attitude toward reading should be to view it as a means of increasing theoretical knowledge, improving learning quality, broadening horizons, and gaining experience, rather than treating it as a tool to achieve high grades. If you read solely for exams, once the exams are over and you graduate, the pressure of exams will disappear, and the reading habit will automatically say goodbye to you. This is not what we want to see.
Starting now, please treat reading as a joyful activity and approach it with a relaxed mindset. Your learning efficiency will undoubtedly improve significantly.
