(III) The Confusion of Men in Life
Men are the pillars of the family and the primary financial providers, so society holds them to higher expectations. The fast-paced modern life and increasingly fierce competition often place men under excessive work pressure, making it difficult for them to have a fixed time to return home. To achieve better performance, some even use their evenings to entertain clients or attend various social activities. Influenced by numerous factors, men become captives of life's pressures. Whether in terms of social functions or roles, they bear too much psychological stress that is hard to let go.
Since childhood, they have been educated to gradually form the belief that the world is a man's world, with men as its rulers and men being superior. To uphold the so-called dignity of "men," countless men live in various forms of suppression. As early as childhood, boys learn that masculinity means being self-reliant, and dependence is seen as cowardice and womanliness. As a result, their communication with others is limited, and their reasonable needs are denied by themselves.
"Unafraid of heaven or earth," "brave" are praises for boys' fighting and brawling, while words like "coward," "wimp," and "scoundrel" become additives that drive some irrational men to take risks, seek trouble, and self-destruct. The saying "A man doesn't cry easily" and "Women are the ones who cry" imply that women's tears evoke sympathy, but men's tears provoke disgust. This gender culture prevents men from expressing emotions through tears and makes them ashamed to acknowledge or express their feelings.
To maintain the image of a "man" and succeed in competition, some men always remain highly vigilant and guarded in interactions, making it difficult to be open and honest. They fear exposing their flaws and weaknesses, leading to a tendency to become closed off and lonely. Disrespect for women makes men afraid of anything associated with "femininity."
In today's era, girls openly use male names and frequently venture into traditionally male domains to explore them. However, men dare not use female names and are ashamed to enter women's traditional spheres. The disdain for "femininity" cuts off men's retreat and choices, forcing some to adopt a pretentious demeanor, alienating their true selves after mocking others.
Inherent habits compel men to be decisive, think rigorously, and be clear-headed, making it hard for them to accept ambiguous or contradictory things simultaneously. This makes them rigid, inflexible, absolute, and tyrannical—either arrogant or, making it difficult to adopt a flexible and honest attitude in life. P14-15
