How to deal with a child's diarrhea for more than three months

Patient's question:

My child is 15 months old and has had diarrhea for 3 months. Sometimes the stool is watery or curd-like, and at other times it is pasty. The stool is sometimes green or yellow, but it has no odor. Stool routine tests and bacterial cultures were normal, with no trophozoites or rotavirus detected (negative). The appetite is good, and there are no signs of significant dehydration.

Doctor's answer:

If there are no or only a small number of white blood cells in the stool, it indicates a non-invasive cause (such as a virus) leading to diarrhea. This is often watery diarrhea. It may sometimes be accompanied by symptoms of dehydration. Treatment principles: Continue eating. Reasonable dietary adjustment. Maintain nutrition; rapidly correct water and electrolyte imbalances; control infections both inside and outside the intestines; symptomatic treatment, enhanced nursing care, and prevention of complications; avoid the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. In this case, it should be differentiated from physiological diarrhea: it is more common in infants under 6 months old. Most are breastfed. They often appear chubby. They usually have eczema. It does not affect development.
