Debussy's 12 Piano Etudes

Author: Claude Debussy (France)
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2000-02-01
Features: The World War I that broke out in 1914 left Debussy in confusion. For him, even the sound of the piano became "loathsome." In the first few months of the following year, Debussy was busy compiling Chopin's etudes for his publisher, Durand. It was during this summer that he conceived the idea of composing his own piano etudes. In the summer of 1915, Debussy left his family and lived alone in the Villa des Bains at Pourville, where he worked fervently on this project. Pourville is a picturesque seaside resort near Dieppe. At this location, Debussy also completed two other works, the Cello Sonata and the Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp.
