1. The Mechanism of Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Acupuncture and moxibustion are one of the components of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), representing an ancient and unique medical method in China. Like other therapies, they operate under the guidance of basic TCM theories, diagnosing and treating based on the principles of zang-fu organs, meridians, yin-yang, and the five elements. It utilizes moxa (mugwort) or other flammable materials along with certain medicinal substances to burn, steam, and apply heat to acupoints, generating thermal or chemical stimuli. Through the action of meridians and acupoints, the goal is to achieve therapeutic effects. Moxibustion has the following characteristics:
- Wide Application Range: It can treat various conditions. Moxibustion can be used alone or in combination with acupuncture or herbal medicine, making its therapeutic scope very broad. It is effective for many chronic diseases and some acute conditions.
- Diverse Techniques: Multiple methods are available in clinical practice, allowing for alternative approaches if one method is ineffective. Following the principle of syndrome differentiation and moxibustion application, it enhances therapeutic outcomes.
- Special Effects: It can complement the limitations of acupuncture and herbal medicine.
- Few Side Effects: It is suitable for all ages, including the elderly and infants. Depending on the condition, constitution, gender, and age, different moxibustion methods are chosen. Except for cases requiring scarring moxibustion or blister moxibustion, which may cause discomfort, other methods are generally well-tolerated, especially for infants and the elderly.
- Combination of Acupoint and Medicine: It holds broad prospects for development. Based on skin-contact moxibustion, suspended moxibustion, and pressed moxibustion, where moxa is applied to acupoints, more and more interposed moxibustion and applied moxibustion combine acupoint stimulation with the chemical effects of medicinal substances. Therefore, the research and application of moxibustion have a promising future.
Additionally, acupuncture has three major functions:
- Regulating Yin-Yang: TCM holds that the human body maintains a relative balance between yin and yang in normal conditions. If this balance is disrupted by one or more factors, various diseases may arise. The key to acupuncture treatment lies in adjusting the body's yin-yang according to the symptoms of different conditions to restore balance.
- Strengthening Zheng and Expelling Pathogenic Factors: "Zheng" refers to the body's resistance to disease, while "pathogenic factors" are the causes of illness. The process of disease development is a struggle between Zheng and pathogenic factors. Disease occurs when the body's resistance is relatively weak and pathogenic factors are relatively dominant. After falling ill, the body continues to produce resistance to combat the pathogenic factors. If Zheng prevails, the pathogen is eliminated, and the disease is cured. If Zheng fails, the pathogen worsens the condition. Thus, strengthening Zheng and expelling pathogenic factors are fundamental to disease recovery. Acupuncture treatment and prevention rely on this mechanism.
- Dredging Meridians: The body's meridians connect internal organs with external tissues and organs, forming an organic whole that maintains relative coordination and balance in all body functions. The occurrence and development of disease are closely linked to meridians and organs. Acupuncture treatment involves stimulating specific points based on the physiological and pathological interactions between meridians and organs to dredge meridians and treat diseases.
