Katherine walked into the front shop and quickly spotted the newcomer standing between an exquisite coat rack and a grumpy-looking brown bear holding up its paws in a playful attack. "Uncle Albert!" the young woman beamed as she quickly approached the bald, plump man. He placed his two travel bags on the ground beside him, marveling at the crowded shop's contents.
"Katherine!" Berkeley Professor called out with equal delight, giving his niece a hug. "It's so nice to see you! How long has it been?"
"At least six months," Katherine replied, hugging her uncle tightly. At that moment, she half-surprised, half-happily noticed the fluffy black thing wrapped around the professor's shoulders.
"Eh, Katherine, what is this?"
"Ah, this is Witty von Baskerville, whom you briefly boasted about over the phone, isn't he?" she asked with a smile, scratching the cat's chin, which seemed quite pleased.
"From a noble British family, what an honor! Uncle Albert said you're especially wise. Is that right?" Witty tilted his head slightly and gave a modest meow.
Katherine couldn't help but laugh and reached out to pick up her uncle's luggage. "Come with me. I'll show you where you'll be sleeping. I'll introduce you to Dilbert."
Katherine Taylor's private room was on the third floor, above two shops. Her cozy, stylish three-bedroom apartment had a bed set up for her uncle, and she even prepared a comfortable basket filled with pillows for Witty von Baskerville. In contrast, the kitchen was the kingdom of the chubby black crow Dilbert. He could move freely around the room but mostly perched on a wooden stick at the dining table.
As a bird, Dilbert seemed to have a surprisingly "high level of education," not only because he could speak different human languages, most of which were curses and vulgarities.
"This isn't what I taught him," Katherine apologized as the bird greeted the guests with a "Damn bastard!"
"I adopted him from the previous owner of the shop when I took it over, and he already knew all this!" she explained.
