What is the normal level of jaundice in children?

Patient's question:

My baby has been perfectly fine during the time I've been taking care of him. Every time we go for an ultrasound, they say the baby is doing well. But since birth, we've noticed the baby is yellow all over, with a severe yellow glow. The doctor said this is jaundice. What is the normal jaundice level for children? Seeking an answer?

Doctor's answer:

The normal value of neonatal jaundice is approximately 3 mg/dL. Four or five days after birth, the jaundice level will gradually increase and reach its peak. At this time, the jaundice level is around 10–12 mg/dL. As long as the child's jaundice level does not exceed 12, treatment is not necessary. Drinking more water and exposing the child to sunlight can help, and the jaundice will typically disappear on its own within about two weeks. If this level is considered indicative of pathological jaundice, prompt treatment to remove the yellowing should be administered.
