Patient's question:
Doctor, I am a IVF twin pregnancy, at 24 weeks of gestation. An obstetric 3D ultrasound showed the maximum depth of amniotic fluid to be 112mm in one fetus, with no fetal abnormalities detected. Blood pressure monitoring was normal, and the glucose tolerance test was normal.Doctor's answer:
Amniocentesis fetal chromosome testing is just one of the methods for fetal detection, not the entire process. If there is an abnormal increase in amniotic fluid, it is necessary to rule out fetal chromosomal abnormalities. However, it does not mean that excessive amniotic fluid necessarily indicates fetal chromosomal abnormalities, as chromosomal issues in fetuses are relatively rare. If the maximum depth of your amniotic fluid is correct, it is quite high, and this condition can easily lead to premature birth. During the procedure, amniotic fluid can be drained to reduce the pressure in the amniotic cavity. However, your current situation may have missed the optimal timing for amniocentesis. Generally, after 24 weeks, we recommend umbilical cord blood, which carries a slightly higher risk compared to amniocentesis.
