Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, novelist, and literary critic, born on January 19, 1809, in Boston and died on October 7, 1849, in Baltimore. He received his education in England, attending the University of Virginia and West Point Military Academy, but failed to graduate due to his eccentric personality. As an adult, he worked as a magazine editor in Baltimore, Richmond, New York, and Philadelphia while writing and publishing literary works. The Murders in the Rue Morgue is a detective novel by Edgar Allan Poe, where the character of Detective Dupin was introduced. In Poe's portrayal, Dupin is exceptionally intelligent and prophetic. To highlight his extraordinary abilities, Poe created a friend who admires Dupin deeply to narrate his deeds, while using a self-proclaimed brilliant but often mistaken police detective as a foil. The process of Dupin solving cases is a logical and rigorous procedure, and at the end of the story, he proudly reveals the process to the reader. Over a hundred years later, this model of Poe's detective novels was imitated by detective novelists worldwide. Whether it is Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or Hercule Poirot by Agatha Christie, both can be seen as "progressive" versions of Dupin. The Gold Bug, though an adventure and treasure hunt rather than a detective story, was also admired by later detective novelists for its intricate plot, rigorous logic, and detailed descriptions of cryptography. Just as Edgar Allan Poe's place in world literary history is undeniable, the artistic value of these two novels is equally so.
