Features: Currently, there are countless management books in China, ranging from diverse to numerous. The revision of this book is motivated by two main reasons. First, there are few management textbooks with a similar systematic structure as this one, and such a framework offers practical convenience. Second, this textbook has a considerable number of users, and to maintain the continuity of the teaching process, it is necessary to revise the book. The revised edition of this book includes the following adjustments:
Part 1, Introduction, retains the two chapters from the previous edition: "The History of Management" and "Basic Principles of Organizational Management," while adding a new chapter titled "Chinese Management," which briefly introduces the characteristics of traditional Chinese management, some management features in the Chinese cultural environment, and proposes several fundamental aspects of management transformation and future Chinese-style management. The other parts retain the original basic structure, which is based on Barnard's Organizational Balance Theory, focusing on management functions and processes through "External Focus—Environmental Management," "Internal Focus—Organizational Management," and "Dynamic Focus—Transformation and Development Process Management."
Some chapters have been adjusted in content: The three chapters in Part 2, "Strategy" (Chapters 5–7), have been revised and supplemented based on changes in the field of strategic management, adding knowledge on international business environments, internationalization strategies, and the organization of multinational enterprises. Part 3, "Planning and Control Systems," has been supplemented with additional management tools; the knowledge points on motivation and leadership have been reorganized; the section on personnel allocation has been significantly revised according to the framework of human resource management; and the section on corporate culture has been enriched with content on Chinese corporate culture.
Part 4 adds new knowledge on the corporate life cycle and crisis management. Other chapters have also undergone varying degrees of revision to some knowledge points and text. To facilitate teaching and learning, introductory cases have been added at the beginning of each chapter to introduce the topic, and reflection questions have been provided at the end of most chapters, along with relevant cases for discussion and deeper understanding. The knowledge points and cases interspersed throughout the chapters have also been supplemented and edited based on content needs in this revision.
The cases cited at the end of each chapter have been ascribed to their adapted sources as much as possible. However, some widely circulated, frequently referenced, and heavily modified introductory cases and illustrative examples cannot all be traced back to their original authors. In this regard, sincere gratitude is extended to all the original authors of the cases.
This book was awarded the First Prize in the 2002 National Outstanding College Textbook Award by the Ministry of Education. The revision has also received support from the Beijing Municipal Education Commission's "Key Project of the Excellent Textbook Construction Program."
