Legal Steps - (Second Edition)

Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-06-01
Features: Today, at the Ugo Natoli Private Law Department (Dipartimento di Diritto Privato “Ugo Natoli” dell'università di Pisa) of Pisa University, the Chinese translation of Justinian's Institutes has been completely revised. This revision is approximately six years after the previous direct Latin translation published by the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing in 1999. The publication of the latter sparked widespread interest in the Chinese legal community. This can be evidenced not only by the fact that the 4,000 copies of the book were sold out long ago but also by the debates and discussions among Chinese scholars about its content and whether it accurately reflects the Latin original. Notably, these debates and discussions were conducted by comparing the current translation with existing translations based on English versions. This favorable comparative perspective naturally helps to demonstrate the necessity of improving and correcting the 1999 translation on a significant scale, incorporating new in-depth reflections and appropriately updating it. Further motivation for the revision comes from Professor Xu Guodong's teaching experience. Over a period of five years, he used this translation of the Institutes as the Roman private law textbook for students at the Law School of Xiamen University when teaching them Roman private law.
