Features: An imaginary cat. Mrs. Biddle walks down the street with a box full of holes on top. "What's in the box?" Mrs. Biddle asks. "A cat." Mrs. Biddle replies. "What's it for?" "At night, I keep dreaming about mice. I'm afraid of mice, and cats catch them." "But the mice in your dreams are imaginary," Mrs. Biddle says. Mrs. Biddle turns to her friend and whispers, "The cat is also imaginary."
A Dog Living on an Island
I live on a small island off the coast of Washington State. To go to a nearby island to work, shop, and take care of my business, all the residents of the island must take the ferry. My neighbor, Torres, has a dog named Pete. One weekend, some vacationers brought a female dog in heat to the island, and Pete refused to leave her. Every time Torres locked him in the bathroom or the utility room, he managed to climb out the window. On Monday morning, she had no choice but to take him to work with her. As Torres dragged the leash and pulled him onto the 8 a.m. ferry, Pete barked loudly in protest. "I only work half a day. We'll take the 1 p.m. ferry back," she told the surprised ferry manager. At work, Torres locked Pete in the toilet. For a while, he scratched wildly and whined to get out, but soon he calmed down. By noon, Torres opened the toilet door, only to find him gone. She searched the office and the nearby area but couldn't find her dog. At 1 p.m., she boarded the ferry with tears in her eyes. "I can't find Pete anywhere," she told the manager. "Don't hurry," the manager said calmly, "Pete took the 11 a.m. ferry home." P19-21
