Publish Date: 2006-06-01
Features: This book systematically introduces (clear-air atmospheric processes), (cloud-rain electrification processes), and (charge generation mechanisms in clouds and fog). It focuses on (lightning in thunderstorm clouds), (physical effects of lightning), (monitoring principles and methods of lightning), (climatic characteristics of lightning), and (global atmospheric electricity transport). The book is divided into ten chapters:
Chapter 1 introduces the fundamentals of electrostatics;
Chapters 2 to 4 primarily describe the charged particles (ions) in clear-air, atmospheric electric fields, atmospheric currents, and atmospheric conductivity—basic electrical properties of the atmosphere;
Chapters 5 and 6 discuss the charging characteristics of cloud and fog particles, the charge structures of various cloud types, especially thunderstorm clouds, and the theoretical mechanisms of thunderstorm electrification;
Chapter 7 covers the structure, types, electric field, current parameters, and formation mechanisms of lightning, as well as its relationship with thunderstorm clouds;
Chapter 8 focuses on the physical effects of lightning, primarily explaining the electromagnetic radiation theory of lightning and its optical spectrum;
Chapter 9 presents lightning monitoring methods, introducing observational techniques for atmospheric electric fields, magnetic fields, and currents, with special emphasis on lightning location methods and satellite-based lightning monitoring;
Chapter 10 addresses the climatic characteristics of lightning, highlighting the distribution patterns of lightning in China, global lightning distribution, global atmospheric electricity transport, and the influence of the sun on atmospheric electricity.
This book serves as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in atmospheric science and lightning protection. It can also be used as a reference for meteorological stations engaged in lightning protection and early warning, as well as for researchers and professionals in power, communication, construction, defense, and other fields related to lightning research and protection.
