Features: In 1959, Eco was 27 years old. That year, he published his second book, The Art and Beauty of the Middle Ages, while also losing his job as a "cultural editor" at the television and radio company. This book established Eco's significant academic position in the study of the Middle Ages and finally earned his father's recognition of his choice to abandon law for the humanities. It was also in this year that Eco began writing a column titled "Notes from Underground" for IlVerri. In 1963, some of these articles were compiled into a book titled Notes from Underground. Thirty years later, the English translation was published, renamed Misreadings.
Initially, the style of "Notes from Underground" was similar to Roland Barthes' Mythologies. After reading this book, out of humility, Eco abandoned his original style and turned to a hybrid imitation genre, ultimately creating his unique Eco-esque satire. This style cultivated countless Eco enthusiasts and inspired countless later authors. Eco once declared the mission of his parody genre: "Never be afraid to go too far. If the goal is right, it is merely a silent, extremely solemn, and confident indication of the writing that may be done in the future, without any shame." In today's world, where incidents like the "Steamed Bun Blood Case" are frequent, and it seems everyone has the potential to create, these words carry particular significance.
This is a very thin book, but it cannot be easily dealt with in one afternoon. It must be known that amidst these puns, madness, flights of fancy, and nonsensical texts, there lies Eco's most "cynical" criticism. In a twisted version of Lolita, Humberto Eco desperately pursues an old grandmother with "strands of white hair that incite seductive laziness": Nellita. In an archaeological conference record from the year one in the mathematical calendar, Professor Anouk Omah of the Joseph Prince Land University in the Arctic of Earth reads a new archaeological discovery about the development of Italian poetry before the Big Bang. We are also granted access to the publisher's internal review report, where an editor rejects manuscripts of The Bible, The Divine Comedy, and Critique of Pure Reason, arguing that they either cannot resolve copyright issues or do not meet market needs.
From the notebook of a journalist who died after being electrocuted during a secret visit to heaven, we learn about God's current situation, as well as the mischievous angels, who, due to political turmoil in heaven, have been exiled to the boiler room of the tenth heaven, along with more untranslatable texts.
