Features: In large-scale film production in Hollywood, the assistant director is responsible for scheduling the shoot; in smaller-scale films, the production supervisor usually handles this task. The production supervisor and the assistant director significantly impact the film because they can complete the shooting within the specified schedule and budget.
5. The line producer is responsible for contacting and securing locations, reporting directly to the production supervisor. If filming is taking place outside the city, a local line producer is often needed for better communication with locals. In Hollywood, this role is typically handled by a location manager, who usually works with an assistant to find locations, suggest suitable shooting sites, secure necessary permits or paperwork for location use, negotiate funding and logistics for different locations, ensure parking space for camera vehicles near the location, guarantee adequate food supply, and maintain good public relations with communities affected by the film's production.
6. The unit production manager (UPM) is responsible for all logistical support and sometimes handles unexpected issues for the cast and crew. In Hollywood, a similar position is called a production coordinator, who works in the production office to coordinate logistics. This includes purchasing film stock, receiving daily reports, arranging transportation and accommodation for cast and crew, and meeting their various needs.
7. The first assistant director (first AD) is responsible for overseeing the director of photography and the director, ensuring the film is shot according to the director's vision. The second assistant director (second AD) is responsible for coordinating the cast and crew, managing the set, and ensuring the smooth operation of the production.
Through comparison, it is clear that due to translation and cultural differences, there are significant distinctions in the division of labor between production departments in China and abroad. The production department is the foundation of the entire crew's smooth operation. The importance of the producer is undeniable, and the ability of other production department staff, such as the production supervisor and production coordinator, to complete their tasks effectively directly determines whether the film can be completed on schedule and within budget. Therefore, when selecting key personnel in the production department, producers often choose individuals they are familiar with and trust. Additionally, production department staff must have high EQ (emotional intelligence), as this is almost entirely a people-facing job: they must coordinate relationships within the crew, act as intermediaries between investors and directors, and communicate with various individuals and departments in society, striving to accomplish more with less time and money.
