One day, a female subordinate named Rita hurriedly walked into her manager's office and plopped down in the chair. She worked in the company's customer service department. For weeks, customers had been calling to complain about shipping delays, leaving her overwhelmed. She was fed up with the situation and demanded that the manager take action, or else she would resign.
"Alright, Rita," the manager said as usual, "I'll figure out what's going on." However, the manager saw Rita as a "small fish," unwilling to take on more responsibility and preferring to stay idle. As a result, Rita never had a chance for promotion.
Experts point out that if women want to excel in their careers and advance continuously, they should know the following principles:
1. Women should independently solve problems
At work, everyone encounters issues—the key is how you handle them. If women adopt a "small fish" attitude, it’s as if they’re telling others that they don’t intend to take on more responsibility. If Rita had walked into her manager's office with solutions instead of just problems, she might have become a candidate for promotion. Experts advise: Solve problems on your own. Solving problems demonstrates your talent and provides an opportunity to contribute significantly to the company. In fact, many promotion opportunities are created when smart subordinates take on work beyond their duties. For women, nothing impresses a boss more than solving difficult challenges.
2. Women should not rely on seniority for promotion
Over the years, most subordinates have believed that as long as they perform their current jobs well and gain enough seniority, they qualify for promotions. This mindset isn’t entirely correct. Doing a good job doesn’t automatically guarantee a promotion. Bosses expect everyone to work diligently and excel in their roles. What matters is their ability to exceed expectations. A boss will never promote someone just because they were efficient yesterday. They promote people because they expect them to be efficient tomorrow. Bosses don’t view promotions as rewards for past achievements but as a means to reach future goals. If a boss believes you can’t handle new responsibilities, no matter how hard you work, you won’t get a promotion.
3. Women should create opportunities
Don’t the saying "Opportunity knocks but once." Opportunities always exist—the issue is that they often vanish in an instant. Unless you’re certain you can’t handle more work, you should happily accept additional responsibilities and believe you’ll eventually master them. If your boss asks, "Do you think you can handle a new task?" you should answer confidently: "Of course." This will create more chances for promotion.
4. Women should maintain a moderate level of tension at work
Keep yourself feeling appropriately stressed at work. A heavy workload with insufficient staff often helps cultivate talent. In organizations where talent thrives, there’s often more work than people to do, increasing everyone’s workload. People end up doing slightly more than their capacity allows. This creates an environment where you must train yourself, overcome challenges, and grow. Yet, it’s precisely such environments that truly shape talent. Continuous work is the best soil for talent development.
