Features: This book appeared during the Ming Dynasty and is a renowned ophthalmological work both in China and abroad. The author is unknown, and it is traditionally attributed to Tang Dynasty's Chen Simiao. In Taoism, the eyes are regarded as the "Silver Sea," and the title "Silver Sea Essence" implies that this book is rich in subtle insights into ophthalmological theories, methods, and herbal treatments. It not only incorporates the achievements of ophthalmology from the Ming Dynasty and earlier but also adds many new treatments for eye diseases, closely integrating ophthalmological theory with medicinal and surgical treatments. The entire book consists of two volumes, listing 82 conditions. These include 12 diseases of the "flesh wheel" (eyelids), 2 conditions of the "blood wheel" (inner and outer corners of the eyes), 13 diseases of the "air wheel" (white sclera), 20 conditions of the "wind wheel" (cornea), 13 diseases of the "water wheel" (pupil), 7 types of eye pain, 2 causes of eye itching, 3 eye injuries, 4 cases of bulging eyes, and 6 eye diseases caused by systemic conditions. Among the 82 conditions, 80 are accompanied by illustrations that indicate the affected areas or symptoms. The book provides meticulous differential diagnosis, is rich in both text and illustrations, and presents balanced and practical treatment methods. Its selected prescriptions are effective, making it an important reference for clinical practice and research in traditional Chinese ophthalmology. The book has also been translated into English by Western scholars and has been widely disseminated globally. In this edition, a carefully selected original text has been repeatedly proofread to ensure accuracy. A preface guide has been added at the beginning, and an index of prescriptions is provided at the end to facilitate learning and reference, making it a must-read for ophthalmologists practicing traditional Chinese medicine.
