Features: Uwe Wessel was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1943 and is currently a professor at the University of Wuppertal, Germany. On the German communication design stage, he holds a solitary yet prominent position, with his direct and concise style being highly notable. However, he does not wish to influence his students but consistently advocates the importance of personal inner creativity. Among Uwe Wessel's countless awards include: twice winning the Grand Prize at the Rakhila International Poster Triennial in Finland in 1983 and 2001, the danh (honorable mention) at the Colorado International Poster Invitational in the U.S. in 1987, awards at the Munich International Poster Column Triennial in 1989 and 1992, the Grand Prize at the German Visual Design Award International Competition in Essen, Germany, in 1995, the Gold Medal at the Brno International Design Triennial in the Czech Republic in 1996, the Silver Medal at the Chaux-de-Fonds International Poster Festival in France, two Bronze Medals at the Toyama International Poster Triennial in Japan, and the Gold Medal at the European ADC Annual Exhibition in 1996, as well as two Silver Awards from the New York ADC in 1998 and 2002.
Shi Gang Yingzi defines design as: 1. Eternity; 2. Revolution; 3. Originality. I would like to recommend her design philosophy to Chinese design classrooms. This triangular concept embodies explanations of technology, courage, creativity, and cultural heritage in design academia. You may not agree with my claim of elevating design to an academic realm, but the existence of design education itself is an acknowledgment of design academia. Design is a systematic discipline with teachable and learnable history and theory, and it continues to evolve toward countless possibilities. The pillar of academic research is the spirit of science. Understanding this spirit is akin to a designer recognizing that every design is first a job. Thus, when you see a three-month crash course in graphic design in the newspaper again, you can’t help but smile wryly.
Hegemann, Yoerdan, Les, Zosler, Matis, and Professor Vasiliev—undoubtedly, they are outstanding graphic designers of this era. This series of books introduces their understanding of design and their methods of design education. What’s more important is that the book also introduces the creations of young designers influenced by them. I once again thank them for their assistance! I also thank the China Youth Publishing House for their assistance!
Postscript: Three people walk together, and there must be a teacher among them!
