Mencius said, "There are taxes of cloth and thread, taxes of grain and rice, and taxes of labor. A gentleman uses one of them, and delays the other two. If he uses two of them, the people will suffer from famine. If he uses all three, father and son will be separated." Chapter 28
Mencius said, "The treasures of a feudal lord are three: land, people, and governance. Those who treasure pearls and jade will inevitably suffer misfortune." Chapter 29
Pan Chengkui served in the state of Qi. Mencius said, "Pan Chengkui is dead!" Pan Chengkui was killed, and his disciples asked, "How did the master know he would be killed?" Mencius replied, "His character was somewhat talented, but he had not heard of the great way of the gentlemen. That is enough to kill him." Chapter 20
Mencius moved and lodged in the Shang Palace. There was a pair of shoes left on the window ledge, and the innkeeper could not find them. Someone asked, "Is this how the disciples behave?" Mencius replied, "Do you think he came to steal the shoes?" The person said, "That is unlikely. When the master sets up his school, he does not pursue the past and does not reject the future. If someone comes with this kind of heart, he accepts them." P276-277
