Can multiple and medication abortions lead to permanent infertility?

Patient's question:

Several years ago, I had multiple induced abortions and medication abortions. Now, when I urgently want a child, I was diagnosed with blocked fallopian tubes. After undergoing fluid dilation and iodine oil contrast, it is now partially open but not fully. I also have normal ovulation, yet I still cannot get pregnant. What is going on? Could it be that multiple abortions have led to permanent infertility? Please reply as soon as possible. Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Hello, if a woman does not conceive without any contraceptive measures one year after an induced abortion, it is considered secondary infertility. Some women may experience infertility after an induced abortion. The reasons for infertility caused by induced abortion include: (1) Tubal inflammation and obstruction: Due to severe cervical inflammation or poor sterilization during the procedure, bacteria may be introduced into the uterine cavity, leading to tubal inflammation and obstruction, which prevents the meeting and fertilization of eggs and sperm. (2) Cervical and uterine cavity adhesion: During the induced abortion process, excessive suction or scraping may damage the cervical canal and endometrium, subsequently causing cervical adhesion obstruction or uterine cavity adhesion shrinkage. This prevents sperm from passing through the cervical canal into the uterine cavity or hinders the implantation and development of the fertilized egg. (3) Amenorrhea: During excessive suction or scraping, the basal layer of the endometrium may be completely removed, or the scraping tool may excessively irritate the basal layer, preventing endometrial regeneration and causing long-term amenorrhea. This leaves no place for the fertilized egg to implant. Induced abortion, especially multiple induced abortions in a short period, can easily lead to tubal inflammation, cervical and uterine cavity adhesion, and amenorrhea, thereby causing infertility. Therefore, induced abortion should not be performed frequently, and contraceptive measures should be consistently followed.
