Features: The new advancements detailed in this book seem to be becoming increasingly clear or bright. However, behind this apparent phenomenon lies a darker force, making the prospects not optimistic. The AIDS epidemic has accelerated; the number of diabetes patients is doubling; global warming is introducing new diseases into areas with weak resident immunity—these effects are described in Chapters 9 and 14; faced with the evolution of pathogens, once-trusted antibiotics have become ineffective; aviation is spreading entirely new diseases (such as SARS) globally; iatrogenic diseases have never been as common as they are now. More changes include: a small portion of essential drugs; a new part of clinical skills; more electrocardiogram content; many new methods reflecting current practice—such as shifting from inclusive (patient-centered care) to rare details (e.g., different manifestations of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes and their genetic links). There are new mnemonics—usually not too bothersome or crude. Many rearrangements are evidence-based (e.g., diabetes). However, the most important changes are the difficult part—the numerous subtle modifications throughout the book. Knowledge updates accumulate progressively, like coral, gradually revealing a new appearance.
