Features: The Waste Land primarily reflects the widespread pessimism, spiritual poverty, and decline of religious faith in the West after World War I, leading to the decline of Western civilization. In the poem, the "waste land" is depicted as desolate: cracked earth, reddening stones, withering trees, and the people in the waste land are mentally dazed and lifeless. The connection between God and man, as well as between people themselves, has been lost. They are isolated from one another, unable to communicate thoughts and emotions, though animalistic sexuality is not lacking. They are in a state of desolation, both externally barren and internally empty. The "waste" in the "waste land" refers to a lack of water, yet thunder is heard but rain does not fall, further intensifying people's inner anxiety. Rain has become a need for the waste land, and through the thunder, the poet suggests that only spiritual dew (conversion to religion, belief in God) can save the people of the waste land. The poet uses mythology as a mirror to reflect reality. In The Waste Land, there is no complete narrative; instead, it employs winding and metaphors to hint at the decline of Western modern civilization and the exhaustion of spiritual life. This increases the difficulty of interpretation for readers unfamiliar with these allusions, which is also the obscurity the poet himself acknowledges. Of course, using mythology to establish a cosmic consciousness that transcends time and space, and making various comparisons and contrasts with the characters and scenes of the modern waste land, is not unique to T.S. Eliot. Modernist writers like James Joyce and W.B. Yeats also created works in this manner. Using mythology to inspire creative imagination is common among modern writers.
