Features: Roman Rolland called Zweig a "hunter of souls." In these biographies of historical figures, influenced by the figures themselves and historical events, Zweig could not fully exert his prowess as a hunter of souls. However, in his novels of this period, especially in the collections Tropical Mania and The Confusion of Feelings (1927), he fully demonstrated this talent. Together with First Experiences, these three novel collections were called "chain novels" by the author. First Experiences primarily deals with childhood, Tropical Mania (including works such as The Patient of Tropical Mania, A Wonderful Night, Letter from an Unknown Woman, A Mysterious Heart) portrays adulthood, and The Confusion of Feelings (including works such as The Confusion of Feelings, Twenty-Four Hours in a Woman's Life, The Fall of a Heart) depicts old age, forming a chain of a human life. First Experiences writes about passion—lust, but not of children, but through the perspective of a child observing the adult world dominated by passion—lust, a world full of "scorching secrets" they still fail to understand. In Tropical Mania, the author shows how adults, driven by passion—lust, are compelled to commit "passion crimes" uncontrollably. In Tropical Mania, the protagonists are all seasoned individuals, and the author meticulously portrays their mentality and flow of consciousness under the influence of passion—lust or when struck by unexpected events. Zweig expressed his intention behind creating these works in his own words, stating that he aimed to present experiences connected to the "shadowy world of passion's dark tones," marked by psychoanalytic influences. He also claimed, "My inherent nature has always been a strong psychological curiosity." In The Patient of Tropical Mania, the male protagonist sacrifices his life due to a momentary impulse; in Letter from an Unknown Woman, a 13-year-old girl falls in love at first sight with a lecher and submits herself like a prostitute; in Twenty-Four Hours in a Woman's Life, a wealthy widow of noble birth becomes utterly captivated by the hands of a young gambler and gives herself to him; and in The Confusion of Feelings, a respected scholar indulges in base homosexual lust and frequents dirty, sordid places.
