What are the symptoms of acute fatty liver during pregnancy?

Patient's question:

My partner has fatty liver disease and is quite overweight. We've been married for 4 years and it's time to have a child. I don't know what the symptoms of acute fatty liver during pregnancy are, so I can report them in time.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, Acute Fatty Liver Disease in Pregnancy, also known as Obstetric Acute Pseudocirrhosis of the Liver, initially presents with persistent nausea, vomiting, fatigue, upper abdominal pain, or headache. Jaundice typically appears within days to a week and progressively worsens, often without itching. The abdominal pain may be localized to the right upper abdomen or be diffuse. Hypertension, proteinuria, and edema are common, while transient polyuria and polydipsia occur in a few cases. If delivery does not occur, the condition may progress, leading to coagulation disorders (e.g., petechiae, ecchymosis, gastrointestinal bleeding, gum bleeding), hypoglycemia, altered consciousness, psychiatric symptoms, hepatic encephalopathy, oliguria, anuria, and renal failure, often resulting in rapid death.
