Features: Le Confession d'un poète is a semi-autobiographical novel that tells the tragedy of a young man who is pessimistic, lacks ideals, and lacks the will to act. In fact, this French Romantic poet with great talent is a typical "century patient." In this work, he not only vividly records his romance with the famous female writer George Sand but also creates a figure who is dissatisfied with society yet unwilling to oppose it, faces the dark reality with irony mixed with a degree of disdain, and wanders between pursuing freedom and being in a state of despair. The term "century disease" is derived from this novel. The protagonist Octave's peers were born during the French Revolution. When Napoleon was feared across Europe, they were still children, and by the time of the Restoration, they had grown into adults. Their disgust for the reactionary forces that overshadowed Europe, the disillusionment with the Enlightenment's illusions, and the feeling of the bleakness of life's prospects led to their despair, making them deeply feel the futility of their own existence. Octave hopes to find happiness in the love of Pierpont, a beautiful woman nearly ten years older than him—a widow—who is ultimately unable to fulfill his desires due to his spiritual emptiness, self-centeredness, and suspicion. They eventually break up. The novel successfully summarizes an entire era in the development of European society.
