Features: Many biographies of various figures have been published in China, including politicians, scientists, philosophers, writers, and entrepreneurs, but there hasn't been a comprehensive series introducing economists. Of course, some translated or domestically written biographies and critical accounts of Western economists have been published sporadically in China, but they are not systematic and mostly focus on the economic theories of contemporary Nobel laureates in economics. Biographies of economists written by Chinese scholars since Adam Smith are still rare in China, and this series aims to fill this gap. Over the past 200 years, Western economics has undergone countless revolutions and produced numerous renowned economists, who have earned their place in the history of economic thought due to their significant contributions. However, among these economists, who can truly be called "economic masters"? There is no universally accepted consensus on this, so the selection of economists for this "Economic Masters Biography Series" inevitably involves some subjective judgment.
However, we adhere to two principles: first, economists who have made globally recognized groundbreaking contributions, hold important academic positions in economic thought, and are frequently mentioned in contemporary economic literature; second, economists who have published relatively complete personal biographies, including autobiographies. Some economists who could be considered masters are excluded from our series because no complete personal biographies of theirs are available. Of course, many economists have published personal biographies, but due to their significant contributions, they have not been included in this series.
It should be noted that Marxist classics writers, such as Marx and Engels, undoubtedly qualify as economic masters and have numerous biographies available. However, as proletarian revolutionary leaders, they are traditionally not classified as part of Western economics. Therefore, they are not included in this series.
