Features: A brief "problem" behavior phase is unavoidable in any child's normal growth process. For example, almost all children experience a period of stuttering when learning to speak. In their efforts to gain parental approval, their actions may also produce other predictable problems. Children between the ages of four and five often steal from their parents, trying to gain some control over them. They lie to their parents to test them. Although these phenomena are only temporary, they can cause concern. A little girl's stomachache and a little boy's bedwetting are much more common than people think (see Chapters 9 and 12). During the process of growing into a healthy and rational adult, these deviations from normal behavior have their own role. It seems that most children must explore or experience these deviations from normal behavior while learning what is acceptable.
