In the animal kingdom, insects are the most numerous, such as butterflies, bees, cicadas, crickets, dragonflies, and mantises, as well as the annoying flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches. Besides these, what other insects are there? Are spiders that spin silk and scorpions that are wise insects? Like other organisms, insects have their own special classification. They belong to the class Insecta in the phylum Arthropoda of the animal kingdom. The main characteristics are:
(1) The body segments are divided into three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen;
(2) The head is the sensory and feeding center, equipped with a mouth and one pair of antennae;
(3) The thorax is the movement center, with three pairs of legs and usually two pairs of wings;
(4) The abdomen is the reproductive and metabolic center, containing reproductive organs and most of the internal organs;
(5) Insects undergo a series of internal and external morphological changes during their growth and development to transform into adults. This physical transformation is called metamorphosis.
Therefore, the basic characteristics of insects can be summarized as: "Three body segments—head, thorax, and abdomen; two pairs of wings and six legs; one pair of antennae on the head; exoskeleton covering the body; multiple morphological changes throughout life, forming a widespread family across the globe."
