Features: The author, Chen Yingzhen (1937—), uses the pen name Xu Nancun when publishing literary criticism. Born into a Christian family in Zhunan, Taiwan, he began writing in his sophomore year of college at Tamkang University of Humanities and Sciences in 1957. In 1964, he published the short story "The Military Clan" in Modern Literature, drawing attention from the Taiwanese literary world. In 1967, he was arrested by the Nationalist authorities on charges of "reading Mao Zedong and Lu Xun's works" and "suspected of rebellion," enduring seven years of imprisonment. In 1977, he participated in the "Local Literature" debate, and his literary criticism significantly promoted the creation of local literature in Taiwan. In 1978, he was arrested again but was quickly released under public pressure. In 1985, he founded the magazine Renjian.
