Does taking emergency contraception cause endocrine disorders?

Patient's question:

Description: 2 days ago I took emergency contraception, and now I have red marks on my face. I don't know if it's because of the emergency contraception. Does emergency contraception cause endocrine disorders? How long after taking it do adverse symptoms appear? Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

Contraceptives can delay the next menstrual period due to their effects of inhibiting and delaying ovulation, as well as their ability to suppress the endometrium. This may also occur as a result of a temporary increase in hormone levels in the blood caused by a one-time use, followed by a decline and subsequent withdrawal bleeding, which manifests as an early menstrual period. The side effects of contraceptives may lead to endocrine disorders, menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, infertility, or gastrointestinal discomfort, headaches, weight gain, nervousness, low mood, skin hyperpigmentation, and acne, among others. Contraceptives should not be used more than three times within a year, and only once per month.
