Features: The "Newly Compiled Primary School Textbook," published in the early summer of the 27th year of the Guangxu reign (1901 AD), was an innovative textbook for primary education. This book was used as an introductory textbook for the External Military Department (i.e., the affiliated primary school) of Nanyang Public College. It is divided into three parts—Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3—and is designed for children to read progressively. This pioneering textbook for primary education attracted new educational concepts and linguistic theories introduced from the West. The renowned linguist Mr. Zhang Zhigong once wrote a book titled "An Initial Exploration of Traditional Chinese Language Education," which provides a detailed introduction to traditional primary education materials. At the end of the book, he listed various primary education textbooks from the late Qing Dynasty. One outstanding feature of the "Newly Compiled Primary School Textbook" is its introduction of newly introduced grammatical concepts to China. The first part of the textbook consists of 150 lessons, all arranged strictly according to major word classes, closely integrating character recognition with grammatical concepts.
