Features: South of the Yangtze River, by the Taihu Lake, blessed with natural beauty and rich in culture, this is the core of the Jiangnan region, the focal point of attention. Since modern times, China's modernization has taken its first steps here: industrialization began here, and urbanization has opened a new chapter. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially since the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Jiangnan region pioneered the development of township enterprises, seized the opportunity of open-type economic development, and led the wave of high-tech industrial development. It has been noted as the birthplace of the "Jiangnan Model" and the forefront of reform and opening up, leaving a vivid and significant mark in the history of China's reform and opening up. For a long time, the Department of History at Soochow University has taken the study of the historical and cultural heritage of the Jiangnan region as one of its major characteristics. This book collects the research achievements of some teachers from the Ancient Chinese History Teaching and Research Office of the Department of History over the past two or three years. Some of these papers have already been published publicly, while others are published for the first time. They adopt multidisciplinary research methods and examine the Jiangnan society during the Ming and Qing dynasties from different perspectives, covering various aspects and fields of society. Among them, the research on traditional social security, charitable causes, and traditional craftsmen more reflects the research expertise and characteristics of the teachers in the Department of History.
