Publish Date: 2001-09-01
Features: Bonsen revisits European history to re-examine some inexplicable phenomena—in some chapters, his narrative resembles a detective seeking medical evidence for spontaneous combustion cases or people growing tails. In some more horrifying anecdotes (such as snakes growing inside human stomachs), he acts more like a social historian, explaining why such tales spread so widely. Bonsen quickly embraces the absurd, his sharp wit, and strong personal judgment add much to the book. — Publishers Weekly
